  1. The latest operating system would be any linux distribution, since you can update your whole operating system daily, and daily updates are distributed.

if you like to be very updated, i would recommend using linux, for example, for a first try i would recommend Ubuntu linux, and guess what, its FREE!

  8. For Microsoft Operating Systems the most current is the Vista line. In this line there are several choices for consumers and businesses. From the least powerful and feature rich to the highest:

Vista Home Basic: does not run the new Areo interface or have the multimedia features such as Media Center. Also lacks security options such as Group Policy, ability to run a website, and cannot join a domain among many other limitations. Great for somebody who only needs the most basic system for common needs such as browsing, email, Instant Messenger, etc.

Vista Home Premium: runs the areo interface if enough resources are installed in the system. Has all multimedia capabilities, runs Media Center. Lacking in security features such as use of Group Policy and cannot join a domain.

Vista Business: runs the Areo interface, stripped of all Multimedia features, can join a domain, have Group Policy applied, and other business needs. Of course, this is for employee's, or those who just want a more powerful machine that is not media featured.

Vista Enterprise: runs the Areo interface, is for Administrators of a business, has Group Policy, many other business features, does not run multimedia features. Can join a domain of course.

Vista Ultimate, has all the features of the new Vista operating system. The fullest featured of the entire lot. All others are stripped of something, while this one is not. Used for both business and home uses.

There are also a couple of other versions but those are meant for other countries to meet the legal requirements. Usually this means all multimedia features are stripped out along with a lot of other stuff. There is a more basic version than even Home Basic intended for those in developing countries who are only now have computer systems available and are learning for the first time what they are and how to use them.

Windows XP is the version below Vista. It too has a few versions with Home Basic, Media Center Edition, and Professional the most popular.

Costs go along with features and power capabilities. The more features of the OS present the more it costs. Ultimate is the most costly, but for me it is the only one I would ever run. I do not see a need to buy a stripped down version as I can easily configure an Ultimate system to standards my grandchildren would require to keep them safe with features such as Group Policy and NTFS Permissions.

I hope this helps you understand the differences. You can also go to the Microsoft family of websites for additional information:
