Interesting question.  Most folks would probably select the distance that they themselves run.

For all-out, building tension, there's nothing like a high-competition 5k or 10k on the track.  Boring to run at times, granted.  But check out what happens when a couple of real competitors are going at it - challenging, backing off, opening up a lead, closing it.  It ends up being most exciting because of the total time watching the race, and the huge amount of tension that builds.

**I'd say a highly competitive mile ranks up there as well, one where you can see the competitors begin their moves 300 meters out.  Good stuff!!

The mile. All the other stuff mentioned is no problem, just run as fast as you can. The mile is about pace tactics and josling :)

Personally, I think short-distances are the most exciting to most people because...well...people have short attention spans and 3000m races are just too d**n long. (I run 3000)

well, I think for ME, I would probably agree with most people, I'd say...100m and 110m hurdles are very exciting to watch, relay as well. My favorite event to watch would be: 4x100 relay, 100 hurdles
