  1. The Sultan of Brunei and the Saudi Arabians. Try reading Sandra Mackey's Saudis:Inside the Desert Kingdom and Seymour Gray's Behind the Veil. Another good source is http://www.forbes.com

"Brunei--and the sultan--benefit from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields. Known for a lavish lifestyle, his palace is said to have 1,788 rooms; has also built mosques with touches in gold and diamonds. "

  2. I remember reading where in the late Saudi King Faud's children had  so much wealth, that the children were responsible for spending an average of $300,000.00 a day.

Can you imagine spending that kind of money EVERY SINGLE DAY?

  3. The royal family in Brunei.

    Evidence:

    - The Sultan is famous for his vast automobile collection. He is variously said to have owned between 3,000 and 5,000 cars. According to Guinness World Records the Sultan's personal private collection has 500 Rolls-Royces - the largest collection of that marque in the world. During the 1990s, his family accounted for almost half of all Rolls-Royce purchases.

    - For personal use, the Sultan possesses a Boeing 747-400 furnished with gold plated furniture, six smaller planes and two helicopters.

    - He also operates a $1 billion theme park called Jerudong Park, which in the past used to be free of charge.

    - He has attempted to share the country's oil wealth. Bruneians have free education and medical services. There is no personal or corporation tax in Brunei.

    - The Brunei royalty owns London's Dorchester Hotel, the New York Palace and the Plaza Athenee in Paris.

  4. Jean-Bédel Bokassa who was deposed as the emperor of the Central Africa Republic in 1979 is a good candidate. He certainly could not compete with the Sultan of Brunei, but his extravagances relative to the wealth of his poverty stricken country were probably much higher.

The sultan may be extravagant, but his citizens have an extremely high standard of living and extraordinary benefits.

Brunei is the answer to another trivia question. What is the only predominantly Muslim country that participates in the United States visa waiver program (no visa required for entry, just a passport)?
