Chess is played more than any other boardgame. It also has more books written about it than any other game (by a huge margin). Now that China and India have taken to the game with gusto, the number of games played is going to increase even more. Chess was suppressed in China during the cultural revolution.

Well, it all depends upon your on of view. Monopoly for sure, but chess (if you class it as a board game) is the biggest 'board game' in the world. However, not western chess but Chinese (Xiangqi) chess - bear in mind that nearly every Chinese person knows how to play Xiangqi and they even have special schools to teach the 'gifted' how to improve.

Also, outside english speaking countries, such as those countries within europe i.e. Germany, Italy, France  there are thousands of board games available, and Monopoly is pretty much a no no. The Settlers of Catan is probably the most popular 'hobby game'.

I think that is difficult to say.  If you mean most popular all over the world in all cultures and places, I would say it could be mancala.  Mancala is an ancient game, easy to learn and play, and has been found in cultures all over the world.  If you include more than just the western world in your question, I think it could be mancala.
