  1. There is obviously a lot of dispute about this question. Jericho is always regarded as the "oldest city" in the world, but there is no firm record that it has been continuously inhabited. The foundation of the city would pre-date writing so this question is unlikely to be settled permanently.

    The wikipedia article lists 17 cities that predate the founding of Rome. Byblos in Lebanon has a strong claim as being the oldest consistantly inhabited city in the world.
