  1. Your question appears to be an oxymoron. You first state that you want to invest in the safest fund but then you want at least 20% annual return.  Those 2 requirements are not compatible. There are only a hand full of funds that have a track record of 20% annual yields over a 5 year period.  Some of those have achieved this return by having invested in foreign resource stocks--oil, gold, copper, etc. Fidelity Canada fund FICDX is one. 22% during the last 5 years but only 16% during the last 10 years. It is down 8% ytd.  That is still an excellent return however. Matthews China Fund is another. MCHFX  23% during the last 5 years and 22% during the last 10 years. But it is down 28% so far this year. See what I mean?   Among closed end funds, Latin America Discovery fund LDF certainly has provided a very good return during the last 5 years, a whopping 44% and 24% during the last 10 years.  It is down 16% ytd.  The areas that have provided the best returns during the last 5 years are Latin America, China,  India, and resource plays.  During the next 5 years these may or may not do so well, especially resource plays.  Certainly, attempting a 20% annual return leaves you open to perhaps a very big disappointment.
