First, a telomere is not a gene.  It's a stretch of repetitive DNA at the end of chromosomes.

Also, a karyotype enables one to visualize chromosomes, not genes.  The smallest human chromosome is #21.

I don't know what the smallest human gene is.  I did a quick search and found something about IGF2, but I don't know if it is still considered the smallest gene.

EDIT: Ravi, "Y" is a chromosome, not a gene, and it is not the smallest chromosome.  The Y chromosome is approximately 60 million base pairs long;  chromosome 21 is the smallest, at approximately 47 million base pairs.

Your question is strange- a karyotype is a diagram of all the chromosomes in order of 1-23. The shortest amont thise is the Y chromosome if present, if not present, it would be 21.

A genome is ehat maps out the actual genes, I have no idea which would be the the shortest. We are not even certain what all of them code for yet.

Did your instructor ask you what was shortest on a certain chromosome?
