The best software for 3d animation (that is completely free) is Blender.

It is the tool used to create 'Big Buck Bunny'

Be warned though. It has a steep learning curve due to it's functionality. It also has a different user interface to anything you've used before. but if you can take the time and effort to learn it, the results speak for themselves
