  1. American definetly. Americans are scary people, their bomb people!

  2. American football. They are all jacked up on steroids and they don't have have 350 lb men running around jumping on people in Australian football.

  3. One is played on a field 100 yards by 60 yards and all the action takes place in the scrimmage where the hits are coming from one direction from the front, the other is played on an oval varying in size from 150 m X 110m to over 180m X  130m and the action is everywhere and the hits from any direction,

one uses padding because of the size of players and impact the other doesn't because of the space afforded to the players,

one has certain jobs for certain players and quite often a player can go his whole career without touching the ball, the other all players can touch the ball if they are good enough,

NFL, you throw the ball to a wide receiver or hand off to a running back you only punt when in trouble, AFL, you kick, handball, tap or punch the ball,

To score in NFL, you only have to break the plane of the goal line, AFL, you must kick the ball for a goal or point but also receive a point for a rushed behind.

In summing up you can't compare, if you put a AFL player in the NFL (not punting) he would get smashed and if you reversed it the same would happen to the NFL player as both would not know where or how to position themselves in those competitions, also to those dumb Yanks who think Rugby is Aussie rules footy get a clue!

  4. American football is a more physical sport. The aim of NFL is to hit each other to block the runners . AFL has banned all types of physical contact and blow the pea out of the whistle if players get close to each other. You can't compare the two sports as they are totally different games. Yes the NFL players wear padding but this is because they play a contact sport. The AFL only need little shorts and a singlet because touching is not allowed. Oh and band aids when they get a boo boo.

  5. American football is the tougher of the two.

They at least still have body contact - & they wear the protective gear due to the amount of serious injuries suffered over a period.

AFL is now less of a body contact sport than basketball is. The umpires blow the whistle more than they do in womens netball.

Rugby league & rugby union is also far tougher than Aussie Rules. Aussie Rules, at this stage, is on a par with soccer.

  6. Tougher to understand? - American - why, cos I cant understand Americans at the best of times..

Tougher grunt? - Australian hands down!! why, cos We dont need padding or helmets.. Though after this week I think some members mite b softening a little.. Heh..

  7. Two different games, toughness is shown in many ways, try standing under a ball with blokes coming at you from all directions, bending down and putting your head over a ball when a pack is coming at you, that is toughness.

As every one has said we dont play with helmets, we dont wear a king size mattress around our steroid induced bodies, i have worn that gear they wear in a sports science facility in the USA, first i can tell you, that my brother and i ran at each other full pace and felt nothing, i dont care how big you are, if two equals forces collided at speed it doesn't matter the size of those forces.

to sum up i would say, it takes more guts to play Aussie rules, but if you are a coward you can hide and not go in for the ball as well, who brought the Rugby League into this, those mongs can't even catch a ball kicked into the air, why, coz they are scared of what is coming at them, why else.?

  8. Aussie Rules is about skills, speed, fitness, team work and courage. Why try and compare it with a stupid American sport.

  9. As an American Football fan, I watched Aussie rules a couple of years and loved it. I would watch it more if I could. That being said, there is no comparison except under the most basic aspect. The reason for the pads in American is that you wouldn't survive the game without them. Blocking causes something like 95% of all American football injuries. Only one other sport that I know of has blocking and that is Hockey (they call it checking) and THEY wear pads as well.

I only watch college or high school ball now since the NFL is only about the money now and not the game. For the players It is still the equivalent of getting in 65 street-fights a game!

I think that the Aussie ball players are healthier as they are not mesomorphs. They are not freaks and seem to be more able to be all around athletes. The American footballers are so specialized to their positions and their body shapes reflect it.

       BOTH TOUGH FOR DIFFERENT REASONS.

  10. American! So much harder rules!

  11. I'd prob be more scared being out on n nfl field than an afl field. I feel i have more of a chance of protecting myself on the afl field. IN american football i'd hate to get crunched by some 300 pound guy, with or without padding.

  12. Hey Chris Z, if you could read than you'd realize that there's no mention of rugby in this question; it's AFL vs NFL

btw AFL is tougher cause you need courage to run back with the flight of the ball into a pack of 5 guys who want to smash you.

NFL, take off your pads and body armor and maybe we'll talk

  13. football is football - who cares which is tougher?

They both have their strengths and weaknesses...

  14. Australian Rules .............. no pads

  15. American, because we are better than them.

  16. Aussies rules is by far

the only protection is a mouth guard

    No helmets

    no neck guard

    no shoulder pads

    no nothing

  17. Gridiron is tougher than AFL.

    Rugby is tougher than both.

I'd love to see how X Man goes with Sonny Bill Williams or Jerry Collins running at him.  He'd probably sit down and cry.

  18. Americans think their football is the toughest! As if!

Aussie Rules might not have the tough contact of other sports, but at least you feel pain.

Americans are so soft they wear a ton of padding!

AFL is the best sport ever!

  19. AUSSIE!

One reason - No pads, no helmets, no steroids - just balls

  20. Australian rules is tougher because they dont have any padding etc unlike the weaklings in american football running around in their ***** tights covered in padding

  21. oooh are we going to get into a cyber bar-brawl over this ?

Aussie rules off course ... YOU DON'T SEE OUR GUYS padded up like Mummies to play the game ..

BUT the way to decide which game is the toughest .. .is to play both games without the padding ... I am sure the aussie rules players COULD PLAY AMERICAN FOOTBALL .. BUT could the unpadded american footballers play aussie rules .. I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!!!

DONKEY (EDIT) .. WRONG GAME MATE... AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL IS NOT RUGBY!!!! ( which is what you described)

  22. American football.

At least they go forward when playing their game. Not retreating & running backwards all the time. Aussie Rules is now just a game of keep-it-off.

  23. I much rather be an American football player than a toothless Aussie rugby player. Rugby sucks, they are like soccer players except they have less teeth because they don't wear protective gear and they are allowed to touch the ball with their hands. NFL all day.
