  1. rugby is tougher

    hurling is faster

  2. Rugby is a tougher, more brutal sport, but hurling is much faster. Now, if they could only hit each other with the sticks.

  3. rugby

  4. for speed - it's definitely hurling. but rugby is more physical with constant hits being taken and received.

  5. Faster - hurling is arguably the fastest team sport in terms of game play. The ball can reach speeds of up to 150km/hr (nearly 100 miles an hour) and travel 100m in distance. The speed of a rugby ball when passed or kicked varies enormously and there's little point in comparing this speed with the speed of a hurling ball - I'd estimate that a kicked rugby ball would be travelling at about 50-80km/hr at its peak but speed isn't really the goal when kicking a rugby ball, accuracy and placement are far more important factors.

In terms of which is tougher, both are tough sports but, having played both, there's no question in my mind that rugby is by far the tougher of the two games - you only need to look at the physical build of top rugby players and top hurling players to realise that whilst it takes a lot of bravery to play hurling, the majority of GAA sports players would be totally incapable of competing physically with the likes of Neil Best, Dennis Leamy and Paul O'Connell.

Sure, you could argue horses for courses and in terms of injuries the sports tend to produce very different kinds of injuries but ultimately it's fairly clear to see that top rugby players get a h**l of a lot more of a battering in the space of a single game than top hurling players therefore it's fair to say that rugby is the tougher sport whereas hurling is the faster.

  6. I play both.

Hurling is def faster. As for tougher, probably rugby.

The hits wear you down more, i know in hurling you get whipped a fair bit but you normally don't feel too much until the morning after!

It's also an 80min rugby game compared to 60mins(unless you play intercounty) hurling which counts for a lot!

Two of the best sports on the planet though.. i think officially hurling is the fastest FIELD sport but ice-hockey is the fastest team sport!

  7. It all depends, rugby is more physical. Hurling is faster. The most physical people in hurling are either the midfielders or the backs, the forwards tend to be fast and skillful (also the player who are not as good get thrown in on the half back line, ie me!). In rugby, lads clatter in to you the whole time. I'll have to go 50:50, hurling is more skillful and rugby is tougher. C'mon Tipp and Eoin Kelly 2007, and Toomevara in club championship
