  1. The answer is  They are fewer in number than primary consumers. This is vital for a food chain to function properly. A good example of this would be a rabbit and a hawk. The rabbit is the primary consumer. The hawk is the secondary consumer. In numbers this would be rabbits number 30, hawks number 3. This is a balance for both animals. If there were 30 rabbits and 25 hawks then the food chain would stop very quick due to the lack of food for the secondary consumer.
