  1. It's impossible to know for sure, because of something called agglutination.  Agglutinating languages allow single words to be created out of endless streams of ideas, modifiers and sub-modifiers.  Thus, in one language, it is possible to have a word that means "They failed utterly to find a final resting place".  There are often special word-particles that mean things like "or so it seemed" and "this is taking place in the hypothetical future" and "or anyway, that's what I heard."

Many of these languages have no practical limit on how many particles can be used.  Thus, a really creative (or masochistic) speaker could come up with much longer words than you would find in any dictionary.  Agglutinative languages include Basque, Finnish, Hungarian, Estonian, Turkish, some Siberian dialects, and Japanese.

One example is the Turkish "Avustralyalılaştıramadıklarımızdan", which means, "one of those whom we could not make Australian"

According to wikipedia, though, the Guinness word record is in Finnish, and is 48 letters long:

    epäjärjestelmällistyttämättömyydelläns...

which means, "I wonder if - even with his/her quality of not having been made unsystematized."

  2. Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapoka...

  3. It is:

    pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanok...

    - a technical term for a lung disease which attacks miners

    It consists of 48 letters..

    :-)

  4. The longest word in English depends upon the definition of what constitutes an English word.

The longest officially recognized place name in an English-speaking country is =

    "Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateat

    uripukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenua

    kitanatahul"

with  (85 letters) which is a hill in New Zealand.

  10. The longest word in any of the major English language dictionaries is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanocon... a word which refers to a lung disease contracted from the inhalation of very fine silica particles, specifically from a volcano. Research has discovered that this word was originally a hoax. It has since been used in a close approximation of its originally intended meaning, lending at least some degree of validity to its claim. I try my best to give a best answer. Please give me 10 points so I can reached my next level. Your kindness will be appreciated.
