  1. The first question is best at what? The F-22 was designed as a pure air superiority fighter with some ground attack capability. The F-35 is primarily an attacker that can act as an effective fighter. The two are meant to be used in very different roles. For fighting, that is engaging other aircraft, the F-22 is absolutely superior. It has higher speed (including supercruise), more maneuverabilty, and an incredible sensor and communications suite. Its sensors and communications are good enough for it to act as a "mini AWACS", supplying information to and commanding numerous fighters. Not only that, but it can launch AMRAAMS without painting a target first, using a linkup with AWACS. This means it can shoot at an enemy without giving it any clue it's even there before the shot. The only thing the F-22 is missing is a helmet mounted sight, and that is expected to be integrated soon. Where the F-35 steps in is with ground attack capability. The F-22 was designed with a weapons bay that is too short for any but a couple of our air to ground weapons. This severely limits its abilty to hit targets on the ground. The F-35 is capable of employing our entire air to ground enventory. This makes it a much more effective attacker. These planes were designed to compliment each other. A mixed group would be the most horrifying thing for an enemy to face. If you're putting them on ground attack missions, the F-35 is going to perform better. It has more armament options and can carry those air to ground weapons without compromizing steath. The F-22 is just too limited in a ground attack role. If you sent them up against each other in air to air combat, I'd have to place the F-22 well on top. It's the ultimate fighter, a true follow-on to the F-15 (which has never been shot down by another fighter, by the way). The F-35 is a replacement for the F-16, with similiar performance. The JSF is an awesome fighter, but not good enough to take a Raptor. In the end, it depends on the intended function. The F-22 and F-35 were designed to compliment each other, not compete.

  2. I would say the F-22 is a more lethal, focused aircraft.  The F-35 is a bit of a "Swiss army knife" platform.  Its design allows for several very different versions to be made from the airframe.  The Raptor has no variants.  To me the fact that the F-35 is exported to other countries for their military and the F-22 is still quite secretive indicates which one is considered the top of the line.  You never get rid of your best stuff!!  The F-35 is a bit of a "free agent".

  3. In terms of stealth and air superiority, the Raptor comes out on top. But the F-35 is more affordable and can perform vertical take off/ landing.

  4. Both have different mission profiles. Each must be good in its class, since they would have been carefully evaluated and then inducted into service.

You cannot compare aircraft with dissimilar objectives.

  5. this is kind of like a question I just answered.

The -22 is better is quite a few ways

    -better engines

    -higher max gross weight

    -better survivability

and maybe a few other things.

Again, the F-35 is probably a little worse than the F-22 in every aspect. Why? Because it was designed to be carrier capable and being carrier capable, the designers would have made many compromises to what it can do. Plus, they made it VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) capable, which probably impacted even more of what the F-35 can do. ( notable max Gross weight and range)

The F-22 has more fuel capacity too. But its actual range is debatable because the F-22 has two engines and the F-35 has only one.

The F-35's stealth may be a little better because the F-35 was made afterward but again, debatable.

Also, actual survivability rate and kill ratio is undetermined because none of them have actually been in combat.

Personally, I will favor two engined jets to single engined jets. History has proven, countless times, that two engines are worth the weight and the fuel expenditure. So many times, double engined jets like F-4, F-18, F-15, have taken a missile down one tail pipe and got home with the other engine.

  6. F/A-22. It was develop for supreme air warfare in then Cold War but the presumed Soviet (enemy) fighter jets never realized due to eventual meltdown of Soviet itself.

F-22 recently expand its capability to Air to Ground fight (which is similar to F-35) and is currently called F/A-22. Not sure if it would affect its air superiority due to adjustment to its dimension but the US probably thinks it has no enemies with matching air superiority as witness in recent warfare, the Afghanistan and Iraq.

However, one point to note is that these are inferior air warfare nations in the first place and there are many bigger and better air superior nations out there! So, if US were to draw their conclusion using Apple to Melon comparison on their supreme air capability…God bless them…

In carrying out Air to Ground mission (and joint strikes with allies), F35 is probably a notch higher since it was built with these (multi-purposes) in mission until F/A-22 overhaul is complete and tested.

Nonetheless, if everything being equal and the (prior overhaul) F-22 meet F-35 in the air, I believe its F-22 that’s going to claim victory.
