Which job is more depressing or annoying to you: a telemarketer or a canvasser?

Anybody who was or is one of these, or was called or approached by one know what this is all about. Personally, I was a canvasser (you know, people with clipboards on the streets "panhandling" for a good cause) just last week and i was let go since i didn't make their quota of raising $130 once and signing up 3 long term members. It was tough and depressing. Although I raised only $60 in my 3 days, at least I was able to build some public support to fight global warming. But i must admit, even though i got tough skin, i don't want to do this job again. Despite having a friendly and enthusiastic approach, I had little luck and most people ignored me and got irritated quickly while i stood for long periods.

  1. You might be canvassing for something you actually CARE about.  I doubt people care about Ronco's latest gadget.

  2. For me it's a canvasser.  You're out in the elements, people looking you in the eye and brushing you off.

If you're a telemarketer, at least you're indoors (hopefully) in a decent office.

Have you considered doing another line of work?  Have you tried working through temporary agencies?  It's a great way to kind of try out jobs and employers.

Good luck, I hope you find a job that suits you better and pays a lot more.

  3. ok I don't like neither but this is funny whenever a telemarketer phones I just pretend to be another telemarketer and try and sell the telemarketer who phoned a vacuum cleaner they have never called again!

  4. Canvassing is at least semi entertaining. Telemarketing is awful. You get disrespected and it's basically boring!

  5. imagine being the presidents speech editor
