  1. A turkish clarinet.

  2. For Mediterranean music, Hasidic music, and Middle Eastern, it is usually a "G Clarinet".  It is like the common "Bb Clarinet", but with a different transposition.

Also, many G Clarinets have a slightly different fingering system... they use the Albert system, which has fewer keys, but makes slides and note bends MUCH easier.  The Albert system is also preferred by Dixieland clarinetists for the same reasons.

Our current common key system is the Boehm, which added keys and changed the materials of the pads to improve on tuning of the Albert system.  You can also find G Clarinets made in the Ohler system, common in Germany... there are a few more keys than the Boehm system, and the tone holes are in slightly different places, which gives the clarinet a deeper, more resonant tone.

So the Turkish clarinet is usually a G Clarinet with Albert system keywork.  Amati, although I don't recommend them for most instruments, actually makes a really great G Clarinet if you're looking for one... they run about $1,500-$2,500, and come standard with the Ohler system keywork.

You can however, play Turkish music on a more common Bb Clarinet... however you may need additional fingerings- quarter tones are VERY common.

    Hope this helped! :)
