My eyes get quite red when i work on the computer for extended periods of time. I've been using Visine A, but i heard recently that these eyedrops are bad for your eyes, eventually making the redness worse over time.

What eyedrops are safe to use, but also good at relieving redness?

  1. Yes, Visine is TERRIBLE for your eyes!  Visine puts a lot of chemicals and other unwanted substances into your drops.  Look for eye drops that are all natural.  You should be able to find something called Artificial Tears.  It's a good brand of eye drops.  :)  Good luck!

  2. Ultimately, any 'relieve the red' drop is NOT healthy for your eyes.

However, using a regular and safe LUBRICANT eye drop can prevent your eyes from drying when using the computer, which in itself makes your eyes look better and feel more comfortable.

The safest OTC option is any brand that is sold in PRESERVATIVE FREE single-use vials.

Irony, as it is, calls for the preservatives in eye drops to irritate our eyes and make things worst- going preservative free is a good move.

  3. The eye drops that advertise to "Get the Red Out" should be used very sparingly.  They work kinda the same way nose spray like afrin work... The more you use them the more your eyes red up soon you need them all the time.  You should use a moistening drop.  Ones like Optiv and Refresh are good, they mimic the oily tears your eyes produce to keep your eyes lubricated.  When on the computer you are focusing on the screen so much that your eyes are not blinking like they are as much as normal.  I keep some drops at my desk at work in order to avoid eye strain and dry eyes.
