I think I'm going to get my braces off soon, and I was just wondering what kind of retainer I should get. Would you prefer the metal one or the clear?

  1. Get the wire one it lasts longer pus the clear one ges cracks and them and makes them really noticable

  2. If you have dogs that like to chew, I wouldn't get the clear ones.

My dog ripped mine apart, and even chewed through the plastic casing for it.

I had to get it replaced twice.

  3. Permanent retainers are the most effective at keeping teeth just as straight as they were when the braces were removed. Downfall is they often lead to gum disease problems (bone loss of the teeth that causes teeth to loosen up and fall out) over time. I have seen many people who have teeth loosen up and fall out after 10-20 years b/c they can't floss. If you get one be sure to use a waterpik daily. Wire retainers work well, but don't fit if you don't wear them for a while. Meaning your teeth moved, it doesn't fit, and a new one is needed and more money. Lastly, clear retainers do not crack unless placed in heat which they shouldn't be b/c this can disform any reatiner especially these. So, very sensitive to heat, but still fit if teeth move a little. Downfall, can lead to clenching to hold the retainers down in placed which can wear down the jaw joint. Wire retainers work well if you will wear them as directed.
