There's no such thing as best. Ultimately, "best" will be someone who knows more than 1 language. So for a start pick one which you are most comfortable with.

.NET is quite hyped nowadays, picking it will be a wise decision. Java on the other hand is also pretty much in demand. You may also consider PHP.

DBA - MS SQL, Oracle are the big players. MySQL is a freeware which you can use while you are "in training".

If you are a true beginner then i would say go to c#. It doesn't means that java is not reachable. But it seems c#, vb.net and little bit easier than java. Dot forget .net is not a language. Its only a framework. C# is the default language for ,net as java for Java.

net supports more language such as c#, vb.net, j#, asp.net. So gofor .net. Once you have mastered .net go for java

PHP is much easier than Java or .NET but it's a bit hard to install and control unless you have someone to help you with that or download XAMPP software package and follow instructions .

A very good language to start with is Python www.python.org , easy , cool, and sweet!
