Question:

Which law course would she want to take?

My niece is wanting to be a lawyer when she's older. We live in England so that needs to be taken into account. Anyway she's on the UCAS website, searching under law when she sees how many courses there are and she doesn't know which is the one she'd need to take.

She did her work experience at the Magistrate's Courts and would like to be a Solicitor rather than a Barrister. Anyway she loved her work experience and is certain she wants that to be her career. But she doesn't know which course she should take.

If you could help, that would be amazing. This is the link with the list of all of the courses. If any other details are needed, just ask.

  1. She needs to take law as a single subject (with the letters LLB after it, rather than BA). That is the standard primary law degree, which leads to recognition from the British Law Council (the BA doesn't - it's more theoretical. Some of the more specialist degrees e.g. maritime law etc listed on UCAS may lead to recognition if they have LLB after the course title but she would have to be very sure of her interest in that area only - the standard law LLB covers a wide range of legal areas). After that she would need to undertake a training contract for two years before qualifying as a solicitor, so far as I am aware.

  2. That link is very helpful. What she needs to do is to decide what area of law she is interested in pursuing such as business law, civil law or even jurisprudence and then when she clicks on said links, all of the universities in the U.K. where that program is offer will appear and that is where she can go to complete her law degree with that specialization.

It is up to her to decide in what area she wants to pursue or she can just do a standard LL.B. with no specialization.
