  1. The so called "Stolen Generation" were children removed from their parents under various State Laws throughout Australia. This came about because of the high influence of religion (mainly Catholic and Anglican) at that time in Australia's history and because Indiginous people were seen as heathens with no so called Christian god.

These children were then educated at Christian schools and even adopted out to white families. It was done under good intentions at the time by a society dominated by religion that didn't know ant better.

This also happened to White girls who had babies born out of wedlock as well, however these were not called stolen even though they were told their baby died etc etc.

I do not know the exact laws under which they were taken but a search under google, yahoo etc should reveal some.

  2. I once did a history paper on the Stolen Generations. From what I recall, state-based laws such as Aboriginal Protection Act permitted the removal of Aboriginal children, as well as the Half-Caste Act (legislated subsequently), under the guise of welfare protection.
