Which layer of soil is most important for growing crops? Why?

  1. Top 1 inch is most ideal. It has benificial micro flora and microfouna. So there will be more humus, more areration, more nutrients etc. It takes 1000 years to form top soil which is highly weathered and fit for cultivation. Earthworm castings will also be more here. All the leaves and organic matter are first deposited here and are digested. So natural part of soil is top soil.


  2. Top soil. It has the most nutrients.

I would have to say the A-Horizon, because it's where the roots grow...but this is completely circumstantial seeing how different environments have different soil layer depths, and how different plants/crops have different root depths.  The A-Horizon usually goes down to a depth of at least a few feet though, and most crops don't have roots that grow deeper than that.

    And the A-Horizon is the scientific term for "topsoil."
