Which lens should I buy for my Canon Digital Rebel for shooting high school seniors outdoors?

I have the body but currently have no lens. I tried out the standard that came with the camera, but found it's image quality to be low. My primary use will be outdoor portraits, although I would like to be able to use it for a few full body. My price range is under $300.

  1. If it's mostly for portraits I would suggest the EF 50mm f/1.4 prime. It's had amazing reviews all around, but it is about $50 more than your budget. If you want to stay within your budget you could go for the EF 50mm f/1.8 prime. It can be picked up for about $100.

  2. For XTi, for $100 you can get 50 mm f 1.8. For $400, you can get 50 mm f 1.4.

Both works like a 80 mm because of the smaller sensor compared to a full frame camera. That is a "short" telephoto--good for portrait. You'll get wonderful background blur with both, but more so with the 1.4 one.

For me, it's the Canon 135 mm f 2 lens. But since I use it with a full frame, it works out better. When mounted on your camera, it's too 'long' unfortunately. But this is what I get.

With lenses, you get what you pay for, and this one was $1,100.  :-(

  3. For That Price, you can get the canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens, which is under one hundred dollars, but if you want to spend more, you should get the 50mm f/1.4, which is much more expensive, it's a little under four hundred dollars.. which is much more expensive. You should get the 50mm f/1.8 lens, you can take head-shots, and full body shots, and you can still get alot of depth of field..

that's a really nice portrait lens for the price, any other good ones would be more expensive than that. like around over four hundred dollars, but if you were willing to spend more, you should get a more expensive L lens. some of canon's lenses are really expensive..

you can start with the 50mm f/1.8 lens, it's a really really nice lens for your digital canon camera. you can get really nice depth of field. you should get this lens for starters, and then when you save up much more money, you could get a much more expensive lens..

there's no shame in getting this lens, although it's a little cheap, that's just price, this lens is used by professional photographers, the price doesn't matter, it's just the quality you can get from the lens, which is really really great.
