Someone gave me a Nikon D40x, will a lens from a SLR work with the new DSLR? I have some Nikon lenses from my previous "film" camera, that are auto focus but will they worth the D40x....

  1. All Nikon F mount lens will fit the D40x with the exception of a few early models. However, you will only be able to manual focus the lens and all auto functions will be disabled.

  2. yes, you can use those same old lenses on this camera, however, they definitely won't autofocus. This camera, unfortunately, can only autofocus an AF-S lens, any other sort of lens will have to be manually focused, and those lenses you have from your old film camera, will have to be manually used all-together. I mean you'd have to use them in the ' M ' mode, you can't use them in auto mode, because the lens controls aren't in the lens. unless they are AF-S lenses, they won't autofocus on this camera, so if you get a lens like an AF 50mm f/1.8 lens, it still won't autofocus, althought it's an autofocus lens. Just because it has an AF symbol doesn't mean you can autofocus on it. so, if you like Autofocus, make sure that you buy an AF-S lens, other than that, you'll have to use manual focus. but any lens for a nikon camera will work on the camera, and you'll be able to use them, however, if they have an aperture ring, you'll have to use it in " m " mode, and if it's not an AF-S lens, you can still use the auto mode, but you'll have to manually focus, which shouldn't be much of a problem to the average photographer.

  3. There are good used AF-I and AF-S lenses made from 1985.  Nikon has 29 current AF-S lenses in its line up.  As time goes buy, more will appear.

Eventually you will be buying a new DSLR (in four or five years).  Either you will be buying something like the current D300 which will use any of the older AF Nikon lenses as well as many older than that ... (I use lenses from the 1970's with mine)
