Which lightbulb is greener?

Are regular incandescent bulbs or compact flourescent bulbs better for the environment, once the factors of life span and mercury deposits are considered

Actually it turns out neither of them are green. You do however, get energy saving bulbs. I think you might of heard of them. They are a cylinder shape and are better for the envirment. You should buy these like i do. They may not last as long but if you care about the earth buy them and keep the world alive!

It depends on how you measure green. If people recycle instead of just throwing them out, replacing the old ones could remove the need for 30 coal-fired power plants. Check the link below, but I've heard IKEA takes them back too.

I don't know which is greener but I'll say this, save your receipts if you buy the compact fluorescent bulbs.

I was going nuts buying all these fluorescent bulbs I would find on sale at different places because of all the publicity about how much they will save in electricity expenses.

When they are on they do provide more brightness than higher wattage incandescent bulbs and they give you this 5 or 10 year guarantee of how long they will last.

It's all a bunch of BS because the new ones I bought blow out just as quickly as the older style bulbs and I don't remember which stores I got  the big deal sales from and didn't keep the receipts.

So you may be using less electricity but there is really no savings for you, just a windfall for the companies pushing this technology.

Both have an insignificant impact on the environment.

Incandescents are slightly yellow. CF are whiter. Neither are green.

CFL. I have coverted all my bulbs to them and can see a significient reduction in my electricity bill! They last a lot longer , therefore, unlikely to need replacement or disposal too often.
