I need help with my homework. And I can't find out which are waxy or oily. Please help!

  1. Of the choices you give, Lipids would be most likely to be waxy or oily because they have long hydrocarbon tails on a polar head.  Paraffins are 100% carbon and hydrogen chains (like lipid tails).  At room temperature they are liquids between 4 and 8 carbons in the chain.  From about 9 carbons up, they are solid at room temp and are waxy.  The longer the chain, the harder and dryer the wax is.

    True wax is a long hydrocarbon chain, like paraffin.

    Lipids have chains of hydrocarbon on them.

    (Hydrocarbon is different from carbohydrate, the hydrocarbon is just CH but the carbohydrate is CHO)
