  1. San Francisco and surrounding areas really need more.  Commuting is terrible.  Whatever public transportation there is takes way too long.  You really have to have a car (especially outside of the city) but it's too expensive (especially inside the city).  It seems to me that the U.S. (everywhere except New York and Portland, OR -as far as I know-) really gave up on the whole train thing to make room for cars, when they could have been at the forefront of public transportation.  Now where's that got them?  Every major U.S. city should have a metro, and very few have ones that are very useful.  I'm living in Barcelona (Catalunya) and it's got the most comprehensive public transportation system I've ever encountered.  There are 3 subway systems, buses, trains.... and you can go online, enter the address or the name of the place your're starting from, where you want to go, and when you want to leave or arrive, and it will show you all possible routes and how long each one takes, then you can watch a 3D animation of your route... it's crazy!

    go here:

and click on 'view route 3D' (on the right) to see how you'd get from the castell montjuic museu militar, to the parc guell museu gaudi.
