  1. www.mapquest.com

  2. Actually, google maps have been the most reliable I've come across. Yes, there are some errors, but the errors are far less in comparison with mapster. And there's possibly still some bad software out there, (one system I had in college actually tried to tell me drive from Point Bollivar around to Houston and back south to arrive in Galveston. Must've been funded by oil companies.)

A company called Mapsco sells maps for a number of cities and towns. While they aren't cheap, having a Mapsco for the area you're in is often worth the cost considering the frustration of online maps.

Any time I'm in an unfamilliar area, the first stop is usually a truck stop where I can get a local or state map. At the very worst, I'm out ten bucks and have a cartographer I can sue.

  3. try microsoft virtual earth

  4. The maps are not off. Your calculations may be "off".  If you have some reason for extreme accuracy try a GPS system. It tells you among other things, pretty much exactly your speed, when you are going to arrive (at your present rate of speed), many other things. Trust me, the voice of many thousands of miles, get a Garmin 200W.

Be sure to lift it out of the mount and hide it somewhere when you are away from the car. The portable is a highly coveted item for theft.

And have somebody drill two screws right into the dashboard to mount it. This is about a foot closer to you than the windshield. Mount it to the right of the steering wheel. You will learn to love this thing!
