  1. I dont know about karate but tie kwon do is white orenge yellow green purpal blue brown red black takes ten or more to black not forgiving broke my back, do to side kick from oponent full contact no protection six months to recover still cant do tie kwon do so I started shou tsu do kung fu love it 10 years exp you must  find whats best for you, to clarafy cant do tie kwon do because of jump kicks.p.s.4years to black sho tso do longer time more days also rank white orenge purpal blue red gold green brown, brown/black then black belt. hope it helped.

  2. First the two are a bit different in the time frames of standard testing and ranking regardless of other's opinions of the arts is irrelevant as far as rank in the two styles go, it has relevance only in when deciding which is the best art for you to study or start with.

In Karate their is White, Yellow, Green, Purple, Brown, Black (Some have Blue, Orange and in TKD they have red) Many of them have Kyu's or stripes meaning a high green belt versus a low green belt.

Now here is where the big diff is between the two normally in the USA at least. In TKD you can get a BB in some places a year to two years, in most Karate schools it takes 4-6 years.  To me their is no time limit you always are learning and rank means little to me compared to knowledge.  These are not accounting the McDojo's around either that sell you a BB for a fee.

The ranking will vary from school to school, only if one is a member of the same organization are you bound to find any unity in Ranking systems. Otherwise each of a variation to them.

    I hope that helps.

  3. This depends on what you want it for, but for self-defence, i would say Aikido. not many people have heard of it, but it is extremely effective. The problem with martial arts like Karate is that they don't teach you how to defend yourself from weapon attacks (which are sadly on the increase), a subject which is key in Aikido. Another advantage is that it does not rely on brute strength and can be practiced by anyone.

Here is a site i have found for the ranks in karate, but im afraid that i have no idea of how long it would take.

I hope this has been useful

  4. I am partial to the 5 animals, The agressive tiger style, the crane balance style, the monkey flexibility style, the viper stealth style, and the mantis style.

  5. I like shaolin, chen style taiji and white eyebrow.  Shaolin has a great deal of history and has its roots imbedded in the earliest teachings of Buddism. Their are acrobatic, fun moves, and just plain brutal attacks and grapples (some not everyone see`s) chen style taichi is very relaxing, and teaches "fa jing" explosive power or controlling rushes of adrenaline is the end result. Thats why chen style is all soft and slow, then boom one punch, kick or swipe is realy fast. Finaly I like white eyebrow because it is a short fist, very practical and is alot of fun to practice. Time just seems to slip by. It has a ancient and profound history much like shaolin and chen style, often cloaked in mystery with many open ended interpretations of the same tales. Anyways I will provide a link with more info.

  6. mma competition has proved that for:

    striking: muay thai, boxing

    grappling: wrestling, brazillian jiu jitsu

sambo and san shou are good but youll have a tough time finding a place to train them outside of russia / china

edit:  heres a link to what REAL martial arts looks like:  http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=...

none of that girly karate and nerdy kung fu stuff
