  4. A simple urinalysis with a culture and sensitivity done for microorganisms would catch most infectious agents. Viral infections which affect the kidney are rare, but they do exist. Those would be diagnosed by blood testing and viral screening.

    Ultrasound is not typically done unless they suspect some damage to the kidney's anatomy, like a blocked ureter, abscess, cancer or the like.
