Question:

Which military branches can one join with a CONDITIONAL GREEN CARD

My husband tried to join the USAF (went to MEPS) with a two-year, CONDITIONAL green card and was denied. I have searched the Internet with no answers, and want some "real-world" insight into this before heading to the recruiting offices (again). So, is joining even possible? Has anyone out there joined something besides USAF on a 2-year conditional green card?

  1. My understanding is you have to have enough time on the green card to fulfill the contract obligation. There was no such thing as two or three year enlistments when I was in, but I think you can enlist in the Army for less than the standard now. Try an Army recruiter.

  2. The only foreigners who are allowed to join our military are those with resident alien cards.  Your husband's conditional green card (same as "temporary) green card was given to him because of the marriage.  It has nothing to do with his intention of becoming a US citizen.

  3. If it's a 2 year green card I don't think you can. However, he can join even if he's a foreign national. You might have to call immigration or go back to the recruiter and ask to speak to his boss. He can get in, you just need to speak to the right people, you have every right to ask to speak to the recruiters boss. The Air Force is a blast.

  4. nope, your going to have to wait till he has a actual green card,  once he has that then he can join. because i have a green card, they looked at it and i had more than 2 years in the states so i would have been able to join. good luck
