At what age is it OK to switch a child to skimmed milk? After all, the fat in milk is not the healthy part, is it?

  1. After they turn 2 it is recommended you switch to low-fat or skim milk.

  2. Kids like all milk.  If you like to use skimmed milk on your cereal then there's no reason why they shouldn't drink it too.  Personally I use semi skimmed and have since she was 2.  There is less vitamins in skimmed milk and kids do need some fat in their diets.

I did laugh at the answer that said that girls used to get their periods at 16.  When???  As for growth hormones, well maybe if they're having their milk specially imported from outside the UK because British cattle have never been given growth hormones.

  3. Most doctors recommend waiting until 2 years old to give children reduced fat milk (not skim though). Children do need a certain amount of fat. The fats in milk aid with brain development, among other things.

  4. Stop worrying milk is milk kids love it skimmed full fat chocolate strawberry live a little

  5. *The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend children over 2yo drink reduced fat milk. It has the same content as whole milk, to help build strong bones & teeth.*

  6. i was told that at one you put them on whole milk and then at 2 you go to 2%.  well,,,we are still on whole milk ( my "babies" are 11 now).  we prefer the taste of whole and like it alot better.  my kids think milk is bad when they are at family's house that has 2%.  my children are very tall and lean (its in the genes) and have no possiblities of being called overweight or inactive.  the pediatrician said for ME and MY kids it is perfectly fine.

  7. after 5

  8. What is worse is the growth hormones that are in it.  This is in all kinds of milk except organic.  They give the cows the hormones to develop them faster to produce milk faster.  Guess what happens to our children?  Remember years ago when girls were getting their periods at 16?  Now look at all the girls getting pregnant in their early teens!

Everyone does need a little fat in their diet.  Keeping it under 15 grams a day for a growing child is good.

I use 2% organic and gave mine the milk from the start. (Except my first, the doctor gave it to her at 5 months).  Most of them are grown now and have no problems.  They can all drink milk, no lactose intolerancy (because the milk was introduced early in life).

  9. Usually after age 2 you can go to low fat or skim. (Babies toddlers need the fat for brain development.)  But if baby is growing/gaining poorly, the doctor may recommend sticking with whole milk longer.

  10. I would wait until they're over the age of 5, the fat in the milk is good for their brain function

  11. around 4 or 5

  12. i'd say 5 but if you want them to have less fat give them semi-skimmed

  13. Everyone needs fat as long as they're healthy. I would suggest giving full fat milk until the age of at least 16 (or whenever your child makes their own food choices) so as to avoid problems like osteoporosis etc. If you want to cut out fat then do it through another food group.

  14. u can switch them when they are about 2 yrs old... i started to get them off whole milk to 2% milk by making the glass half and half and then by changing it all right away... i dont recommend skim milk for a child as the vitamins are minimal in this milk and they will not drink it usually... if u are worried about the fat content move them to 1% but no lower...
