    The "D" in DNA  stands for Deoxyribose, which is the monosaccharide that along with phosphates, make up the backbones of DNA.

    If you look at RNA, its monosaccharide is Ribose. The difference between the 2 is that Deoxyribose is has one less oxygen than ribose. Hence:

    "de-" = without

    "oxy" = oxygen

    "ribose" = ribose   :-)

  4. Deoxyribose - a 5 carbon (pentose) monosaccharide.
