  1. It isn't raining, and hasn't since last week.

You might consult http://www.weather.com for your weather questions. Just enter Houston, Texas in the field at top and follow the links.

  2. We have about 300 days of sunshine a year. October through December and March through June are great too. We rarely get hurricanes because once they are in the gulf they generally turn north toward Louisiana. The humidity is pretty bad here during July and August so make sure you don't stay out in the sun too long.

  3. The Gulf is not bad here because hurricanes don't make it around Louisiana to the upper Texas coast. A few might get here but maybe about 2 or 3 every 2 years. If you want 70-80 degrees the months would be mid April to late May, and late September to late October.

Rain in March and April, hurricane season starts in June and ends in September. Kemah is not dangerous as far as weather goes so I don't know what you mean by dangerous.

  4. We've already had two.  Where have you been?  It was 106* for the last week.  Don't bring coats.  You won't need them.  It was cold today, only 96*.

It smells in Houston.  There's a lot of industry there.  I live in Fort Worth and visit the coast often.

Might be the ocean, but we call it the Gulf.  Check out Mustang Island while you're there.  It's a fun place to buy stuff for the folks back home.

  5. November through March

  6. Houston has four seasons. Spring, Summer, Fall and AUGUST.

Right now we are in AUGUST. It is hot and horrible.

About the middle of September it will turn very nice, that is when a lot of the festivals are. Greek Fest, Italian Fest, things like that. October is nice too. Halloween is always good weather.

Around Christmas time it can get a bit chilly and sometimes wet and chilly. On Christmas Eve of 03 there was some snow, but it didn't stick. That is the last time it snowed. Sometimes you can get a miserable, grey and rainy days towards the end of December, other times it is like October is up in Yankee-land.  I have been out in the backyard raking leaves in a sweater thinking "what a great October day this is", then remembering that it is actually late January!! January is when we have our marathon, (MLK day) that should tell you something.

February is my least favorite month. That is cold, grey, and blustery. March tends to "come in like a lion, go out like a lamb".  By the end of March spring has sprung.  It stays plesant till late May, early June when Summer starts. Summer lasts till just after the 4th of July...then AUGUST hits and it gets HOT and miserable and everyone runs inside. Anyone who can leaves town then.  It is cooler and more plesant near the beach than in Houston proper in August, but not a whole lot.

This link should give you a graph of what the weather is normally like here.

Technically hurricane season lasts from 1 June to 30 November. This isn't a local thing, it is a hemispheric wide season.  They made it so long so that it can catch any unusual storms that pop up on odd days in odd years. However hurricanes are a function of how hot the water in the Atlantic and the Gulf is, so you don't normally see them till around the 4th of July, and it is rare to see one past October 1st, though it is possible.

As for hurricanes, you need to understand that there is a HUGE difference between a hurricane hitting land, and a hurricane hitting YOU.  The folks on Weather Channel hype these things, and the Global Warming people hyped these things (back when people still took that seriously) but the Gulf Coast is a BIG place, and just because a storm hits two states over doesn't mean it is going to bother you.  Hurricane RITA was heading right for us a few years ago, then it turned and hit Cameron Louisiana. Trashed them out, didn't bother us at all  Hurricanes hit a very small area. They tend to hit it hard, but they hit small areas.

(If you are scared because of Hurricane Katrina pictures, don't be. Katrina was a mess because the Mayor of New Orleans and the Gov. of Louisian were incompetent fools. IF they had had decent leadership in place, and had maintained the levees like they were supposed to, it wouldn't have been a problem.)

Kemah is a very nice town and quite near the coast. It is right near NASA so the schools tend to be good, and it has a funky beach feel. Tookies is down there, and they have the best burgers you will ever taste. My in-laws used to live there. Quite, suburban, nice. Has the Kemah boardwalk and a good resturant called T-Bone Toms.

In the event of a DIRECT HIT from a hurricane you would have to evacuate from Kemah. Satilites being what they are it is very likely that you would have at least 24 hours warning for this.  However, as I said, a hurricane hitting down the coast in Brownsville, or over in Louisiana won't effect you at all here.

Basicly all you have to do for hurricane season is keep your gas tank full at all times, have a small hurricane kit at home, check the weather on TV, and you really should get flood insurance.  Regular homeowners insurance WILL NOT cover your for Hurricane damage, so you NEED to get flood insurance. (Lots of people find that out the hard way every time a big storm hits, even though they run TV and newspaper ads telling people this all the time.)  Other than that, it's really nothing to worry about.  Unless you live right on the beach or in a particularly lowlying area even tropical storms are no big deal. (BTW ask your realtor about when your place floods...they won't talk about it unless you force them too, but they do have to inform you of flooding danger by law.)

So relax, enjoy, and welcome to Houston.

  7. March, April, May, October, November and sometimes  December are the best months IMO to visit Houston. Of course, April has some rain. The beaches in Galveston have stinking seaweed as soon as the weather gets warmer, about the middle of May. And the seaweed continues until the middle of September, or when the weather starts to cool. Personally, I don't think the beaches are worthy of visiting until the seaweed is gone because it smells like rotting fish.

Living near the ocean is nice but can be a pain when there's a storm in the Gulf. But if you build your house hurricane smart; it doesn't require too much preparation for storms.

  8. For me, the 3-4 months of winter is awesome. The rest of the months are just hot and humid.

  9. try to avoid the beach.. lots of hurricanes but it gets around 75 and 80 jan, feb, march, april

  10. The weather changes here very often. It is fairly unpredictable. When it is between 70-80 that is called early spring and late fall. It gets HOT, and rarely gets cold but it has happened. It could rain everyday here for a month then not rain for 6 months. We don't have defined seasons. Hurricane season is June 1- November 30. It can be dangerous if you don't listen to the warnings. Always evacuate when mandated and make sure you have proper insurance. Houston hasn't had a direct hit from a hurricane in a while but Beaumont 100 miles to the East has had 3 direct hits in 3 years. Enjoy your move!
