Because of the job changing I need to move to San Juan, How to move there is the big problem. Some friends told me, I should sell all my furnitures, and buy new in Puerto Rico, since the shipping fee is very hight. As you know, selling and buying are all the problem. What should I do? Also I have a car, the same problem, selling or shipping ? And which company is good for shipping a car?

  1. Hire someone to do a "Estate" sale for you, they keep a percentage of the profit, in California is like 10 %. These people will sell even your shampoo if you leave it out. Just pack your clothing, personal effects, etc. and stay a weekend with a friend because the estate sale personnel will take care of everything. P.R. also has "craigslist" so you can buy used stuff over there. Other people in P.R. are now transferring to the U.S. and are now selling their stuff because they don't want to ship it back to the U.S. If you have electronic equipment you really can't part with, mail it to yourself properly packed to your new address or company address in P.R., it's way cheaper.

Get on websites to check about car shipping and then look for complaints on that company. Also, ASK the company who transferred you, they SHOULD be providing you with all this info. Ask others employees who work for you company and were transferred there about advice and leads. The "estate" people can also sell your car.

Boy, you are going to love your new digs, enjoy!

  2. NEVER drag your c**p with you when you move to another country.  I have LIVED in 8 COUNTRIES and I learned early on that it just was false economy to take all my stuff with me.  Not only the shipping costs are a problem, but the moving of all that stuff creates it's own problems.  AND, the furnitire and stuff you have in your present home, may not even be COMPATIBLE with the new home.

Take my hard learned advice... SELL OUT and then buy what you need when you need it.  Also, don't drag along a bunch of chothing that you will probably never wear.  If you move a car, that will cost you more than the car is worth unless you have a brand new Lexus.

DHL is very good at moving things and stuff between countries, so you can contact them and they can tell you it's going to cost about $10,000 to move all your junk to Puerto Rico... and that may be a low price.

  3. if you need an advice regard shipping nationaly go to the link

  4. Rosa Del Monte

  5. When we moved here, we used Crowley, mainly because they had a dock pretty close to our old place.

They dropped off a trailer (they come in different lengths) and we packed it ourselves, then they came and drove it away.  It cost about $1500 I think for a 54 ft trailer.

When we got here, we had to pay import tax on electronics  etc (was a couple hundred bucks), but I don't know if they still require that.

Problem is, once here, you need a truck driver to get your trailer and drive it to your new place.

There are other ways of shipping your stuff though- air freight  etc.  Do a search.  There are relocation companies that can help.

We found it WAY cheaper to move as much furniture here.  You will never be able to  sell your old stuff for what it will cost you to buy new stuff.

About the car- it may be better to sell it and then buy a different one here. Unless your current car is older, you will be hit with a lot of tax. Shipping fees are usually a % of the cars value (10% or so).  Then PR adds a HUGE tax based on the cars value.  Check here for an idea:

  6. I say keep only the furniture you really want & ship it. If you dont care too much for it then get rid of it. Cars actually do cost more in PR. I suggest you look at classifieds & try to figure out an average value of your car in PR. Take the price it costs & add the shipping+tax & see if it equals the value in PR. If so, then you can send it.

*also just know that everything you send will be taxed an excise tax when you pick it up in PR. Cars tax start at $750 & it goes up depending on the value of the car. Add that to the shipping price. I sent a car from Philly to PR for about $1000 plus almost another $1000 for tax. The shipping company doesnt always tell you this. You can call this number to get the excise tax 787-774-1474. Or you can estimate the tax for vehicles here:

I have always used La Rosa del Monte moving company. I moved lots of things with them & never had a problem. I will list the website along with others below. Goodluck :)

  7. I moved from Ohio and used La Rosa del Monte shipping company.  I had them give me a quote per item...fridge, sofa, ect.  It took more time but I found it more beneficial in deciding what to take and what to get rid of.  Furniture here can be expensive to replace as with electronics.  Cars are pretty expensive too.  I paid $3,200 for a 1996 Toyota Tercel which is worth like nothing where I am from.  Cars (the body) tend to last alot longer here.  If you have any more questions feel free to let me know.
