  1. Well, in the past year, natural resource funds have done very well.

    But, if you're asking where you should invest NOW, I would have a much different answer.

    Many people only look at which funds have had the best performance over the last year, 3 years, or 5 years, and invest in those funds.  This is called "chasing returns," and is a HORRIBLE strategy.  Markets are cyclical - more often than not, the best performing funds in the past year are among the WORST performing funds the following year.

    As long as you're looking long-term (you should not be in mutual funds if you'll be needing your money within 5 years), don't concern yourself with specific industries or funds that do well in certain economic conditions, because those conditions WILL change.

    If you're worried about market declines in the coming year, use a dollar-cost averaging strategy, whereby you split your investment into 5-10 equal parts, and invest those equal amounts each month.  That way, you will take advantage of market downturns (if they occur) during that period.
