Which mvp NL or AL in MLB had the lowest average?

i was wondering cause sportscenter and baseball shows are saying delgado will win mvp if he stays hot in september and his average is like 250 sumthing

  1. Marty Marion hit just .267 in 1944 and won NL MVP.  I believe that that's the lowest... more recently, Johnny Bench and Hank Sauer hit .270 in 1972 and 1955, respectively.  That's the second-lowest, I believe.


  2. Not counting pitchers who won MVP, since 1931 (when the BBWAA took over administration of the awards), the lowest AVG by a winning player was .267 by Marty Marion, shortstop for the 1944 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals.

    Narrowly edging past Marion is 1961 AL MVP winner Roger Maris, at .269 -- though that unimpressive AVG probably isn't why the voters supported him that year.


  3. Delgado's average is .259 which is bound to go up considering how good he's been lately. And he would be the MVP not because of his average but for his impact on the team and keeping his team in the race thus making him "Most Valuable".
