I like Carter better. Tanner just makes me think of leather tanners, which kind of grosses me out...but that's just me!

They can both be sir names but Carter is more know as a sir name. I would go with Tanner.

My vote is for Carter.

This is because (a) the name sounds more handsome, and (b) Carter flows better with the middle name you've chosen. I dislike the blatant repetition of the 'an' sound is Tanner Alan. It seems a bit too much to me, but this is just a matter of personal preference. I prefer the repetition of sounds in names to be a little bit more subtle.

I really like the middle name you've chosen! Alan is a lovely name. I'm surprised that you don't think that Carter doesn't sound masculine. It sounds distinctly male to me, while Tanner reminds me of more unisex names like Taylor and Tyler -- probably because the names start with 't' and end with 'er'. I associate Carter more with the Archer, Hunter and Cooper type names (occupational surnames used as first names) that remain more masculine than feminine.

A thought.  When he's on the playground, will kids call him Farter k**e?  Maybe Fanner Tike is preferable.  We all know how kids can be when teasing others.

I like Carter because it works as your child becomes older where Tanner is sort of childish or not very business sounding but Carter sounds great as a child and as an adult

Carter Alan Fike is my choice. Tanner is fine too but I have always liked Carter better but I see here I am the minority.
