I have know several Francis, they all hated there names, most went by Frank, one Fran.  None like the name, one was my husband grandfather(he was the oldest)

Michael is too popular so I'd go for Francis but he'd go as Frankie as a boy and Frank as a man.

I like both names, having known an extremely charming Francis and a less charming Michael. Michael is a "normal" kind of name, Francis is a little fancier.
