  1. mai parents call if saigon i guess since my parents were from tha south  so i'd stick w/ saigon

  2. I call it Saigon because I've been accustomed to calling that city Saigon since I was a kid. I would bet that most people call it Saigon instead of Ho Chi Minh City.

My family in North Vietnam use Saigon and rarely use Ho Chi Minh City unless it's for formal purposes. My wife who lived in Hanoi for 13 years and now lives in Saigon calls the city Saigon. My eight year old cousin who lives in Hanoi says Saigon. My uncle who is a retired general and was a major in the NVA says Saigon. Tan Son Nhat Airport's airport designation is SGN.

I think Ho Chi Minh City should change it's name back to Saigon and another city in Vietnam should be named Ho Chi Minh City. The people in Vinh would love to change their city name to Ho Chi Minh City because they love him like a god there, while most in Saigon hate him.

  3. i per fer to call it SAIGON

  4. I prefer Saigon because it's short

  5. That poor Thailander doesn't have a clue what she's talking about.

This is our country. You have no business to mention your country name when the question has nothing to do with you.

A vote for SAIGON from me.

  6. Saigon, of course! A lot of people like to forget the past . Remember Siam?

  7. Ho Chi Minh City was the name given to Saigon after the communist takeover in the 1970's, to those who fled Vietnam and to the people who were not in favor of the takeover, they will and always will refer to the city as Saigon. The airport city code is still SGN, although officially it refers to Ho Chi Minh City. Saigon was the symbol of the South, and the name change was a "slap in the face" to those who opposed Ho Chi Minh and what he stood for. Even to this day, those who opposed the Communist North, will never refer to their beloved Saigon as Ho Chi Minh City. Officially it is Ho Chi Minh City, however.

  8. Saigon is forever.

  9. I prefer to call it Thailand...hehehe

  10. I call it Ho Chi Minh City just because that what it says on the map.

  11. Although the name Ho Chi Minh is accepted worldwide. However, for people who lived and were born in Vietnam, we still prefer Saigon.

BKS you obviously don't know geography, do you?

  12. I prefer to call it Saigon because it is easier to say and that is what most people call it in Vietnam

  13. i prefer saigon becuz that was its orginal name. The name it has from the beginning. Not no ho chi minh city. i would never refer my beloved sagion to some s**+ t as s name as ho chi minh. hahaha my as s

  14. I totally agree with you!

  15. I prefer Saigon (or Sài Gòn in real Vietnamese) when talking about culture, travel and history. But Ho Chi Minh City is its official name. Thus the airports should refer to it by 'HCMC', not Saigon. You can see the difference in using 'Saigon' and 'HCMC' in Vietnam.

  16. Saigon represents those glory days of Vietnam. I can safely say 99% of people would prefer Saigon.

  17. Officially the city is called Ho Chi Minh City but many Vietnamese refer to the city as Saigon especially when speaking to foreigners.  The city center is technically Saigon but the city as a whole is Ho Chi Minh City.  But I prefer to call it Saigon.

  18. I call it Ho Chi Minh City. I was born in the 80s so that's how I've always known it. I'll keep calling it that until they decide to officially change the name, if they ever do.

  19. I always thought  tp HCMC refered to the province of HCMC and the city itself is still called Saigon.

I prefer Saigon, it's easy to pronounce and shorter to write.

  20. I call it SaiGon.  We were there two weeks ago and our relatives there still call it SaiGon.  HCM city means the whole surrounding area as far as they are concerned.

Like HaNoi is an area and a city; but many villages connected to it with different names.  While the whole area is called HaNoi.  We are in HaNoi right now visiting.

    Cheers C
