Hello, I'm a recent college graduate and would like to start doing crossword puzzles. Eventually I'd like to do the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle but that is too difficult for me right now. Which other newspaper or magazine do you recommend for a beginner crossword puzzle player? Thank you!!

  1. If I were you, I would just start with a 2008 off-the-wall crossword puzzle calender.  By now, all 2008 calendars have to be marked dwon by at least 90% at major bookstores or online. And with off-the-wall calendar crosswords, if you get frustrated with the first puzzle, you can tear off the page you're working on and start the next one.  Plus, unlike newspaper crosswords, you don't have to wait til the next day to get the answers. Or you can buy a crossword puzzle book for beginners.

  2. The New York Times has books with puzzles rated by day published (Monday's are easiest, and they slope harder as you get later in the week).

Penny Press, Dell and Kappa all have magazines that are cheap that are nothing but easy crosswords; best bang for the buck, but they lean towards computer generation from old clue databases (and I should know, as an original programmer)

If you're into TV/movie trivia, you can start with People/TV Guide puzzles.  Your local paper will probably be easy to access and should average to being a lot easier than the New York Times.

Here are some dailies you can access online: http://www.primate.wisc.edu/people/hamel...
