  1. An 18X lens would be something like 18 - 350mm and I don't think there are any made. Tamron has an 18-250mm, a 14X equivalent, Nikon might have one in about the same focal length as the Tamron. Why not just get a 400mm, 500mm or even a 600mm prime lens (expensive though) for the shots that you need an 18X lens for.

  2. DSLR's do not have an optical zoom equivalent, since they are designed to use interchangeable lenses.  The optical zoom "x" factor is only applicable when talking about P&S cameras who's lenses cannot be changed.

The lenses on DSLR's are discribed in their focal lengths like any other non-P&S camera (DSLR's, 35 mm SLR's, medium and large format cameras)

You can always do the math if you are interested (200/18 = 11.1x for the 18-200 mm VR lens), but since you can always change lenses if you need say a 12 mm or 600 mm lens the ratio of the lens from short to long focal length is immaterial and says nothing about the quality of the lens ... the fact that my 12-24 mm super wide angle lens is a 2x lens or my $7,400 400 mm f/2.8 is a 1x lens is just a number that has nothing to do with the quality of the lens when shooting professional photos

  3. This http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/... is an 11X. Isn't that enough? It would be a good idea to get familiar with all of the Nikon lenses. It's a good point of reference when looking at  other brands. http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/...

Sigma, Tokina and Tamron also make Nikon fit lenses.
