  1. Funny you should say that, I was both, a chef for 20+ years and when my back and knees gave out became a MCSE professional and A+ technician, if you passionate about the foodservice trade then I would recommend it, it has more openings and adventures, but the computer business is going to be here for a awhile and pay well, almost as much in the beginning if not more than restaurant/hotel work, it is a dilemma I wish I had stumbled across when I was younger, and not force to make the choice.

  2. Get an entry level job in a kitchen.

Apply at every restaurant within walking distance of your home. You will most likely be the dishwasher but all the really great chefs start there!

Once you understand the difference between home cooking and food service you will be able to make an informed decision.

If you love it, the work is rewarding and truly the best job on earth, but if you are not suited to it, the kitchen is pure h**l.

I'd still be there but my back gave out, unfortunately a common problem in the kitchen.

  3. If cooking is your passion, I think the answer is obvious here.  Do what your heart wants to.  Cook, and be merry. =]

  4. If cooking is your passion then go for it.  It doesn't mean that you have to give up the computer and there are a lot of legit companies that you can work for part time on the computer.  Put both your talents to work for you.  You have the right frame of mind when you say that you want to do something that you love to do.  Life is short and you can't save time so you must spend your time wisely.  Good luck in the kitchen.
