  1. a nuclear family is a family consisting of a mother, father, and children. a traditional nuclear family as set by american standards is both parents (mother and father) and two children (boy and girl). In this generation a nuclear family can mean just about anything (single dads, single moms, grandparents, ect.). "also called  elementary family  in sociology and anthropology, a group of persons united by ties of marriage and parenthood or adoption and consisting of a man, a woman, and their socially recognized children. This unit was once widely held to be the most basic and universal form of social organization." (britannica, 2008)Extended family is the family outside your circle intermediate circle (cousins, aunts, 2nd cousin, ect.). "Extended family (or joint family) is a term with several distinct meanings. First, it is used synonymously with consanguineous family. Second, in societies dominated by the conjugal family, it is used to refer to kindred who does not belong to the conjugal family. Often there could be many generations living under the same roof, depending on the circumstances." (wikipedia, 2007)

  2. Extended Family = parents and children (other relatives as well) live close to each other or in the same house. This kind of family  (in my mind) has the strongest support system as each member helps each other out.

Nuclear family traditionally has a father, mother and children. These days it includes single parents and same s*x relationships.
