  1. The kidney needs to maintain a very large similarity (high concentration of solute) in the renal cortex to be able to function. This is needed to be able to draw out water from the tubule. To be able to do this you need to pump lots of salt into the tissue, and quickly remove the water that moves with it (osmosis). Water is removed from the surroudning tissue by capillaries.
