  1. Mendel's work didn't gain widespread attention until the turn of the century, 1900-ish.


  2. Although his research was done while Darwin was working on his own, Mendel was never read by Darwin nor by most of his contemporaries. Darwin developed a parallel theory Pangenesis, to explain hereditary traits.

  3. Mendel.  Believe it or not, Mendel's genetic work went unnoticed while Darwin was speculating his theories.  Had they worked together, they may have discovered many great things.

  4. C. Mendel.  Ironic as it is, Mendels contribution to science was only realized during the modern synthesis in the 1940-1960's as the unit of heredity.

    Darwin was content with a lamarkianish type heredity schema.
