  1. protein taken in excess of requirements is degraded and the amino acids are stripped of the amnio group whch via glutamate is introduced to the Urea Cycle in the liver  which converts the "ammonia "from the amino acid into urea which is excreted .The carbon skeleton remaining after the "ammonia" has been removed from an amino acid  can be used to to either make glucose  or ketone bodies ( from acetoacetyl CoA(. Fourteen of the 20 common amino acids are directly glucogenic  and four of the others make one fragment that can be used for glucose and one for acetyl or acetoacetyl CoA. In the original adkins diet  with no carbs    the carbohydrate skeletons for use in burning fat and making glucose were provideed by proteins in the diet . Animals that make urea as their principal nitrogenous waste are called ureotelic
