  1. What are our choices for characteristics?  The infromation below may help you.

One differentiating characteristic is that prokaryotes are asexual, meaning their offspring nearly always bear the exact characterisitcs of the parent cell. (In fact, the cell essentially replicates itself according to its own DNA and then divides itself from the newly created cell.)  Since the Prokaryotes exhibit this asexual behavior as opposed to sexual behavior, where a recombination of chromosones occur to form unique entities (as with humans), evolution of the prokaryotic cell has been fairly stagnant over its two billion year lifespan.

  2. Lack a nucleus and membrane-formed organelles

Possess cell wall of peptidoglycan rather than celluolose

Possess 70s ribosomes instead of 80s ribosomes

Flagella if present are rotary rather than whip-like action

    Single circular chromosomes lacking histones

    May have extra chromosomal plasmids

Lack sexual reproduction, mitosis and meiosis

DNA lacks introns so there is simultaneous transcription and translantion

  3. I would add too #2, prokaryotes are much smaller then eukaryotic cells, and can have gram + or - peptoglydican cell walls, and that nearly all have cell walls. bacteria are prokaryotic.

    hope that helps
