i have this school project and we have to use a water bottle and put three materials around it to stop conduction and heat radiation. i've chosen fiberglass, wool, and foam, but if u can think of BETTER materials than the three, pls say so.

also, i wanted to ask, should i replace one of the three materials with bubble wrap?? thxx

  1. First wrap shiny foil around  your bottle to reflect radiant heat.  I think  bubble wrap is good for the next layer, because it has the most air.  Use foam to cover the first 2 layers to prevent heat loss or gain due to conduction.

  2. Rubber

  3. Remember, the best insulator would be a perfect vacuum between what you are trying to insulate and the surrounding environment.

(That's the reason behind double pane windows for your house...if we could create a perfect vacuum between the panes, it would be an exceptional insulator)

Whatever materials you wrap to create the smallest amount of movement of the air molecules between the bottle and the environment would work the best.  I like the idea of bubble wrap and foam :0).   Styrofoam is an excellent insulator.   I think if you put the water bottle that is wrapped in bubble wrap and foam and wedge it in a block of styrofoam, you'd be doing pretty darned good!
