recently our family got into a heated discussion about which of the salt and pepper shakers is used for pepper. Some say the one with the smaller and fewer holes; others say the one with more and larger holes. Which is it?

  1. It is the pot with the most holes that is usually used for pepper, though there is no law, depends on how much salt you like!!

  2. easy way to remember...

pepper, more letters in the word, more holes in the shaker

salt, fewer letters in the word, fewer holes in the shaker

  3. pepper needs more holes than salt because you rarely need a heavy dose of salt if you're using it for your own personal meal.  so it's obviously pepper that needs the holes because it is sometimes slow to fall and needs several shakes.  salt is more of a dash thing.  like a dash of salt on your carrot fried rice.

  4. more holes - as salt flows freely

    it uses fewer holes

    all the best

  5. more holes = pepper

    less holes = salt

Unless the holes are shaped into an S and P, then you can probably figure that out! LOL

  6. more holes- salt has a faster viscosity so it flows more easily

  7. More holes Pepper, Few holes Salt !!! i hope this don't look stupid to you. Because thats how i remember it... lol

  8. the one with more holes. to be honest, I didnt know the answer to that and had to ask my dad lol.  You learn something new every day !

  9. There are two schools of thought on identifying salt vs. pepper shakers by their holes.  I subscribe to the one that uses the most holes for the salt - especially if the holes are larger.  Salt used to come in larger granules than today, and generally speaking, people use more salt than pepper on their food.

On the other hand, pepper is sometimes ground coarsely and you need larger holes for dispensing.

In my collection of 1,624 sets of shakers, I have assigned the ones with the more holes as the salt shakers.  Hope this helps.
