  1. Well, there is the fact that those working in electronics stores are not photographers.  At least those working in camera stores have and use cameras.

That said, do you know what is important when it comes to features?

Well here is the list ...

    Most important first

    * Superior lenses

    * Sophisticated analog/digital converter (the more the camera costs, usually the better the electronics)

    * The size of the sensor (DSLR's sensors are usually over 15 times larger than P&S cameras)

    * and finally the pixel count.  there is a sweet spot where if more pixels are added, the image quality actually diminishes (over 14MP on a 1/2.5" is where the smaller pixels necessary to fit on the sensor, cannot resolve as well as the larger pixels of say a 10MP count on the same size sensor.)

That said, there is one other thing you seem to have missed ... the optical zoom on the Panasonic is far better at 10x than the Canon's slightly better than average 4x

  2. canon cameras are generally of better quality. I would say that in terms of point and shoots, those two are not good cameras, but if those are the two you have your heart set on, go for the second one.

  3. yeah NOT the first one, i suggest a cool pix one, those work REALLY WELL.

  4. Well, you picked two very good sounding camera's.

I have had many canon camera's so I can speak to their excellency.  However, I hear good things about the Lumix series too.  Both reviews sounded good to me.

Do you have use for the 10x zoom in the Lumix?

Will you use the movie mode, and do you have an HD TV to play them on?

If YES to both questions, then get the Lumix.

If NO to both questions, then get the canon.

Good luck, have fun, you will be very happy with either camera.

I presently am using the canon SD series camera (compact camera fits in a pocket) but I have had a few A series cameras in the past.  I wanted to point out that the A series uses AA batteries, so remember to factor in a good charger and some rechargeable AA batteries.  Don't bother using alkaline batteries, they don't last very long at all.

The Lumix has a custom Lithium Ion battery pack and includes the charger, so no extra cost here.

Personally, I prefer the included battery pack and charger (Canon SD series uses lithium pack).  If you worry about a battery dying at an in-opportune time, buy a spare and keep it charged up.

another thought: since you said you don't know anything about cameras, then I would steer you toward the Canon SD series.  They take excellent pictures, and, very important I think, are small enough to easily carry with you.  If a camera can easily fit in a pocket or purse, you are much more likely to take it with you, and therefore to take a picture.  And with the Canon SD camera's, it will be a very good picture.

    Check out this one:

    http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SD...

it comes in silver or pink or gold or blue, about $220.

For a little less money you can get a simpler SD cam for $160

I have and still love the SD800IS

  5. canon definetly,

    they don't take blurry pictures,

are great for photography and video,

and are great quality! you should definetly get one!

  6. very often, do i back up a brand like panasonic, but i guess that this would be an exception. I would go with the panasonic because it doesn't have that " lens error" complaint like the canon cameras. The canon doesn't have the same zoom range, and you'd be suprised about how much the difference is in practise. And, it looks better. The canon looooks a little weird. Personally, i'm tired with the canon line of cameras. Hehe, i'm gone back to nikon, i have the nikon d40::P

to compare the image quality of the two different cameras, just follow the following links, and further the search.

  7. Tough choice. I'm familiar with the Lumix line (the prosumer models) and can vouch for the Leica-designed lens. Canon is also a top-notch brand. The Panny's 10x zoom vs. the Canon's 4x would be the selling point for me.

  8. you should buy the first one.
